Letter: State Auditor Candidate Mike Lake is a 'True Outsider'

WATERTOWN - You don’t need to be paying much attention to know there’s a heated race on for the governor’s office this year. But what people might be missing is another hotly contested race, for the Democratic nomination for state auditor. For the first time in the quarter century I’ve called my life, there’s a serious race going on for the auditor’s office. And, in the primary elections on Sept. 14, it’s really the only seriously contested race on the ballot.

There are no primary contests on either side for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state or attorney general. On the Republican side, there is no contest for treasurer, and a two-way contest for auditor. On the Democratic side, there is a two-way race for treasurer, and what I call the “real battle” of this primary season — the Democratic primary for state auditor.

In the race for state auditor, I strongly encourage my friends and neighbors who are registered Democrats or Independents to vote on the Democratic ballot on Sept. 14 and support Mike Lake for state auditor. Mike is a true outsider — not a Beacon Hill insider like former legislator/lobbyist/labor secretary Suzanne Bump, or former state senator and current Worcester County Sheriff Guy Glodis. He is completely independent of the Beacon Hill “way of life,” as he demonstrated recently by being the only Democratic candidate to call on retiring auditor Joe DeNucci to rescind the unjustified and poorly-timed 5 percent salary increase (retroactive to July 1) he handed to his staff on his way out of the office. Mike’s opponents have both refused to call for the raises to be rescinded. They have put Beacon Hill insiders’ interests beforethe interests of the taxpayers, and have criticized Mike for doing what a true auditor should do — speaking up for taxpayers.

Mike also has a plan to make the auditor’s office more proactive — finding millions of dollars in savings, by auditing MassHealth and introducing “energy audits” to help Massachusetts save millions of dollars in energy expenses. And, not being a part of the Beacon Hill crowd, Mike is not beholden to any agency or institution, and will be an independent-minded watchdog for the taxpayers’ money — exactly what an auditor should be.

I hope you will consider giving your support to Mike Lake in the Democratic primary on Sept. 14. Please visit electmikelake.com for more information.
