(Boston, MA- January 3, 2014): Renowned Irish athletes Donal Óg Cusack and Dessie Farrell joined a crowd of hundreds in Boston recently for the campaign kickoff event for Democratic Candidate for Lt. Governor of Massachusetts Mike Lake, a Clinton White House appointee and President and CEO of Leading Cities.

The athletes arrived directly from Dublin just as former Democratic Presidential nominee and Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis and his wife Kitty formally endorsed Lake at the event. This is only the second time in his political career that Dukakis has endorsed a candidate in a competitive statewide primary election.

Cusack, an Irish hurler who formerly played as a goalkeeper for the Cork senior team, serves as the current Chairman of the Gaelic Players Association. Farrell is a former All-Star Gaelic footballer and is the Chief Executive and founder of the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) the official representative body for Ireland's Gaelic footballers and hurlers. The GPA is working with Lake to bring the Gaelic games to Boston and to develop a local advisory board to support the services the GPA provides to the athletes who are not compensated as professional athletes as would be the case in the U.S.

“Having the presence of two of Ireland’s most famous athletes was both an honor and a symbol of the deep cultural ties that unite Massachusetts and Ireland” said Lake. In October, Lake led a delegation of business leaders from the Commonwealth to Ireland creating opportunities for greater cooperation and commerce. Lake added “Massachusetts is operating in a global economy—we must fully compete in that global arena to bring jobs and investment to our Commonwealth.”

Lake was appointed by President Clinton as Special Assistant for White House Operations and is the President and CEO of Leading Cities, an international organization that focuses on exchanging solutions to municipal challenges and creating jobs through business development.
