Democratic Candidate for State Auditor, Mike Lake, has spoken out on abuses like this during his campaign. He issued the following statement:

I am disappointed that patronage and parting gifts are again coming to light as Auditor DeNucci nears the end of his tenure. This is yet another example of career politicians believing that the rules do not apply to them. It is the State Auditor’s Office (SAO) that is responsible for ensuring accountability and transparency in government, making it particularly alarming that these violations occurred in this of all agencies.
The State Ethics Commission’s allegations today highlight the need for new leadership in the Auditor's office and a break from politics as usual. The people of Massachusetts deserve an Auditor who will uphold the integrity of State Government. For the first time in 24 years, we are electing a new State Auditor. I am proud to be the one candidate who has not been tarnished by ethics violations, campaign finance violations, accusations of tax evasion, or illegal campaign contributions. I believe the Commonwealth deserves someone with a clean record and an independent perspective committed to eliminating the atmosphere of entitlement and abuse.
During my campaign for State Auditor, I have made clear that I will not hire members of my family to the SAO during my tenure as Auditor. Today, I call on my Democratic and Republican opponents to make this same commitment.

It is reports of patronage such as this that erode confidence in our government and reduce the ability of our public managers and elected officials to advocate for the good of the Commonwealth. I have committed to beginning my term as Auditor by doing a full audit of the SAO in order to find the type of waste that the Commission has brought to light today. I look forward to bringing new blood to the SAO and leading the agency to a more efficient, productive and cost effective future.
